Who’s leading the AI-Adoption race in Low-Code Application Development?

What Modern Low-Code Application Development Platforms Should Deliver:
Today’s platforms must offer more than simplified UI design and workflow automation. Critical next-gen capabilities include:

Key Findings:
• Leading vendors GeneXus and OutSystems stand out with advanced AI-driven capabilities that enable intelligent application generation and developer augmentation.
• Capable vendors Kissflow, Salesforce, and Mendix show promise in targeted areas such as workflow automation, enterprise integration, and guided development but lack a unified or bold AI strategy.
• Lagging vendors Appian and Zoho Creator remain focused on narrower or simplified implementations and risk losing relevance in the face of generative AI evolution.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of application development, artificial intelligence is rewriting the rules of engagement. Low-code and no-code platforms are no longer just about simplifying development—they're becoming intelligent ecosystems that promise to transform how businesses create software.

The race to dominate AI-enhanced low-code development is intense, with several key players positioning themselves to reshape the industry. Each platform brings a unique approach to integrating artificial intelligence into the application development process.

OutSystems: The Disputable Leader

OutSystems has embedded AI throughout its platform, offering AI Mentor with generative code generation, intelligent error detection, and performance optimization. It provides smart integration recommendations, natural language application design translation, adaptive UI/UX suggestions, and automated testing capabilities. It has just added application generation through NLP. However, it is a bit late to introduce this feature and a few of the vendors are already perfecting their generative AI models to create applications. It will be interesting to see how well OutSystems is able to execute this feat.

OutSystems, the disputable leader in low code application development space is now playing catchup with vendors who are already using the current generative AI capabilities.

Salesforce: The Enterprise Tyrant

Salesforce deeply integrates it’s Einstein GPT across its ecosystem, which derives its strength from Salesforce’s massive datasets and provides AI-driven functionality that can be seamlessly embedded into applications. It offers a robust, albeit sometimes overwhelming, AI-powered development experience for large enterprises with complex requirements.

However, its extensive ecosystem also poses a challenge for Salesforce to create a single AI model that can be embedded throughout the ecosystem for data management, recommendations, workflow management, application generation and other uses cases, hence it is forced to create different AI models for different implementation. Users have reported substituting Salesforce systems and switching to its low code competitors which offers a unified one-stop solution, which relieves them of the headache to unify and invest in multiple Salesforce products.

Salesforce, remains the unavoidable choice for low code platform for customers already having heavy investments in its ecosystem, but for customers having smaller operation, all-in-one, unified solutions which offer comprehensive implementation of AI are a better choice.”

Mendix: Solution with restricted AI

Mendix is focusing on AI-Assisted Development tools which aims to simplify development workflows while maintaining a balance between AI support and developer autonomy. It's an interesting strategy—providing intelligent guidance without completely removing the developer's creative control.

The challenge for Mendix remains finding the sweet spot between AI assistance and the flexibility required for complex, custom application development. It seems that Mendix’s focus on keeping developers in control of development is holding it back from utilizing the full potential of current generative AI models, specifically for code generation and prototype creation.

Mendix, is moving at a cautious pace in implementing the AI capabilities that have matured and is not innovating enough to be the leader for AI-enabled low code application development platform.

GeneXus: The Generative AI Innovator

Perhaps the most exciting player in the field is GeneXus, which is investing heavily in generative AI capabilities that can lift development duties from developers’ shoulders and transform high-level business inputs directly into functional applications. This approach represents a potentially revolutionary shift in how software is conceived and created. While still working to expand its user base, GeneXus hints at a future where AI can translate business requirements directly into fully functional software.

GeneXus, through its distinctive generative AI features, enabling developers to automate app generation from high-level business inputs and is now taking the leadership role for adopting AI in low code.”

Kissflow: Practical AI Solution

Kissflow focuses on workflow automation and process optimization. Its natural language processing capabilities allow users to create editable prototypes with unprecedented ease utilizing simple high-level input to create functional applications. Although innovative in converting high-level inputs to prototype applications, the platform feels limited in managing large-scale, high-throughput environments. Kissflow is very well on the path to lead the AI revolution as it continues to strengthen its AI capabilities and expand its ability to perform at scale and manage high volume of throughput.

Kissflow is making strides in adopting AI and generative AI to its platform but lack of scalability to manage complex tasks is restricting its market recognition.”

Appian: The Low Code Process Automation Tool

Appian has positioned itself as an enterprise-grade AI solution for process automation. By leveraging machine learning, the platform optimizes workflows and decision-making with remarkable precision. Its strength lies in seamlessly integrating AI into complex business processes, providing predictive insights that transform traditional development paradigms. However, Appian's approach to focus on the niche of process automation makes it unsuitable for customers looking for a more all-rounder solution to serve multiple use cases and more comprehensive use of AI, to simplify and accelerate the development process in its entirety.

Appian has focused its AI development on intelligent process automation, leveraging machine learning to optimize workflows and decision-making. Choosing this niche makes it unsuitable for broadscale deployment.”

Zoho Creator: The Simpleton’s platform

Zoho Creator represents a nuanced approach to AI-powered low-code development, prioritizing simplicity and practical innovation. With natural language processing and contextual automation, the platform enables businesses to create intelligent applications that adapt and learn from user behavior. Zoho Creator’s AI capabilities are dependent on Zoho’s in-house AI Assistant, Zia which does not compare to established AI models available and integrating Creator with other AI models is a tedious task. With the objective to keep it’s AI approach simple and practical, Zoho has lost the sight to leverage AI to achieve complex tasks and process which is further cemented by the fact that it wants its customers to stick with Zia for their AI requirements.

Zoho Creator provides a very simplified and obvious solution for customers focussing on simpler tasks as the limited AI capabilities of its AI- assistant, Zia renders it inadequate for citizen developers to accomplish complex tasks.

Who's Winning the Race?

While OutSystems has been the leader in low code application development market and plans to keep its position through its latest feature updates, the race is far from over. Will the quick adopters of generative AI GeneXus and Kissflow dethrone it or vendors like Zoho and Salesforce will be able to make significant strides, each bringing innovative approaches that challenge the status quo.

The ultimate winner will likely be the platform that can most effectively:

- Provide intelligent, context-aware assistance

- Maintain developer flexibility

- Scale across different business sizes and complexities

- Continuously learn and improve its AI capabilities
