When do Organisations require Process Orchestration?

Numerous software products routinely promote their capability to effectively support end-to-end process automation, which involves domains like RPA and Microservices Orchestration, amongst others. However, their implementation often reduces process logic to certain basic workflow patterns, including sequential steps, conditional branches, or parallel step execution. These patterns are more suitable for localized task automation or straightforward integration flows, like RPA handling user interface tasks or iPaaS transferring data between applications, amongst other things. However, these patterns appear insufficient for intricate and real-life business processes, further underlining the complexity of most processes which necessitates advanced workflow patterns. This clearly highlights the gap between the claimed end-to-end support to be provided and the intricate requirements of comprehensive business process automation.

Instances when Process Orchestration is required –

  1. Intense Process Complexity –Process execution necessitates the coordinated completion of tasks, which is characterized by a specific logic that extends beyond a mere sequence of steps. This coordination, essential for navigating through the process complexity, operates on a logic rarely confined to a straightforward sequence. As is evident, real-world process logic is notably intricate, necessitating the description of advanced workflow patterns. The key requirement thus lies in recognizing that process logic in its real-world application should be simple to comprehend and that it requires a sophisticated framework to articulate its multifaceted nature.

Challenges encountered by Organizations while dealing with process complexity:

  • Aligning with the Purpose - Facilitating collaboration between technical and non-technical stakeholders is challenging, but also extremely imperative for designing, operating, and enhancing complex end-to-end processes.
  • Operating Resilience & Sustained Scalability - Ensuring the reliable and scalable execution of existing processes across the organizational endpoints is equally essential. For instance, an e-commerce vendor encountering a surge in online orders would require seamless processing across systems and personnel. Herein, a process orchestrator must efficiently manage transaction spikes and provide accurate and optimized availability by enabling orchestration logic in a variable deployment scenario, across multiple data centers. This capability is pivotal for sustaining operational resilience and meeting the demands of the ever-dynamic and fluctuating business environments.

    2. End-point Diversity

Spanning across different possible process endpoints (including systems, devices, and people), every process is comprised of a plethora of tasks, and executing a process requires the coordinated and simultaneous execution of all these tasks. As such, a process orchestration software is responsible for executing the overall process, although it does not directly execute individual tasks per se. Instead, tasks are carried out by the endpoints, which may include people, software systems, or physical devices. The greater the diversity of these endpoints, the more crucial it becomes to have a robust process orchestration software that enables rapid and flexible integration.In scenarios with diverse endpoints—which could vary from people using different front-end devices to applications executing tasks via APIs—process orchestration assumes an extremely pivotal role. Managing this diversity demands a comprehensive approach, and it is in this regard that orchestration serves as the central anchor, harmonizing disparate elements into seamless synchronized workflows. This not only ensures streamlined operations but also facilitates adaptability and agility. It provides organizations with the resilience and efficiency needed to excel in complex, interconnected business environments, solidifying its position as a critical enabler of operational excellence.

Numerous software products routinely claim to support end-to-end process automation scenarios, including RPA and Microservices Orchestration, amongst other things. However, it’s been observed that they often reduce the core process logic to certain basic patterns like sequential steps, conditional branches, or parallel execution, and no more. Needless to say, these patterns suffice for the majority of localized tasks but fall short miserably for the complex real-life processes, which further highlights a glaring gap between the true end-to-end automation capabilities that are required and those that are normally presented by vendors. Also, the real-world process complexity demands advanced workflow patterns and sophisticated orchestration capabilities to ensure seamless coordination, resilience, scalability, and integration across diverse endpoints. Thus, effective process orchestration is absolutely crucial for navigating intricate business processes and scenarios, and in achieving operational excellence in dynamic and varied work environments.
