Streamlining Application Deployment through the Power of Infrastructure From Code

Infrastructure From Code (IfC) is an approach that creates, configures, & manages cloud resources understanding of a software application’s source code without explicit description to enable developers to simplify the process of building scalable apps in the cloud. IfC performs the conversion of code into cloud resources by neglecting the declarative part of serverless development and focusing on business logic instead of building SAM templates or CDK constructs to solve business problems. Though it’s relatively a new concept, the idea of focusing only on business logic and releasing the control of infrastructure to the framework trusting that it will decide the correct resource to create based on the infrastructure written is appealing. While my initial opinions were reserved that the implementation of IfC is a thing of the future, after talking with industry experts and doing research, My opinion has changed to the future being IfC that adapts based on production traffic.
Though there are a few established vendors like AWS, Microsoft, Hashicorp, Pulumi, and others whose offerings I’ve studied thoroughly, recently I got a chance to attend a webinar of appCD demonstrating the launch of their latest offering Generative Infrastructure from Code. Led by industry experts & appCD personnel, Lauren Rother, VP of Product, Taylor Becker Principal Software Engineer, and Cesar Rodriguez, VP of Engineering, the webinar explained the concept of Infrastructure from Code, its benefits, requirements by business for its implementation, and business items thoroughly. Following is the summary of the key takeaways:
Simplifying Complexity:
IFC empowers developers by leveraging the application's code to determine the necessary infrastructure for optimal app performance. This not only reduces cognitive load but also accelerates delivery, enabling teams to focus more on innovation rather than grappling with infrastructure intricacies.
Complementing Existing Frameworks:
Contrary to common misconceptions, IFC doesn't seek to replace existing Infrastructure Deployment Platforms (IDPs) but rather complements them. By seamlessly integrating with established frameworks, it enhances efficiency without requiring a complete overhaul of existing systems.

The adoption of IFC brings about a multitude of benefits, including heightened productivity, enhanced security, and even improved profitability. The webinar elucidated the key requirements for the successful implementation of IFC, emphasizing factors such as minimal changes to application code, language-agnostic compatibility, and intuitive integration with existing workflows. Furthermore, it highlighted the tangible business outcomes of adopting IFC, including streamlined processes, standardized configurations, and enhanced contextual awareness.
Demonstrating Practicality:
To illustrate the efficacy of IFC in action, the webinar featured a comprehensive product demo, showcasing its seamless integration and real-world applicability. Additionally, the panel addressed pertinent questions from participants, providing insights into the practical implementation and potential challenges.
The webinar also highlighted queries by users & tech enthusiasts and dealt with questions about the creation of normal IaC files to save in the repository, Cloud Support, options to integrate with Sentinel, file retention, and limitations with the particular versions.
Analyst’s Comment: “appCD’s ability to automatically generate IaC from application code without requiring any code changes and in a secure way with the least privileges per present standard will enable its users to accelerate deployment of applications in the cloud. The three-step functioning of appCD comprising code analysis to understand applications’ required infrastructure, provision of a visualization of the deployment architecture, and generation of Terraform or Helm charts based on application code is a streamlined procedure to develop IaC based on the user’s application code.”
