Executive Summary:
As the Intelligent Process Orchestration (IPO) landscape matures into a strategic layer for enterprise operations, vendors are increasingly under pressure to move beyond their legacy automation and further embrace AI-native, composable, and user-centric orchestration models.
This critical review blog by the QKS Group evaluates whether today’s key IPO vendors - categorized as ‘Thinkers and Pioneers’, are driving this transformation through real innovation or merely adapting incrementally.
What Modern IPO Platforms Must Deliver:
To lead in this space, platforms must offer more than just orchestration frameworks. Essential capabilities in this regard would include:
Key Findings:
The global Intelligent Process Orchestration (IPO) landscape is undergoing significant transitions in the recent past. We at the QKS Group have identified the following categories in which majority of the vendor basket is falling into -
Let us understand which Key Vendors are assuming which role in this hierarchy of this historic ‘IPO Revolution’. Let us also realize, that Process Orchestration has been in the making for quite some time now and has traversed from the days of the ‘Screen Scrapping Technology’ and has now reached the edifice of the ‘Intelligent Process Orchestration (IPO)’ technology.
In this blog, we would be focusing more on the 1st and the 2nd Category of Revolution/ Evolution of the IPO Vendors and try dissecting their offerings, based on the above-mentioned bifurcation (also highlighting their significant aspects) i.e. on –
Appian = Absolute Conceptualizer -
Let’s start from the ‘Conceptualizers’ in this lot of IPO vendors. Appian's platform incorporates advanced artificial intelligence features, including AI Copilot and AI Skills, to enhance data processing and decision-making. The platform was one of the early conceptualisers of private AI Model Development allowing users to build custom AI and machine learning models without coding, ensuring that these private AI models are exclusively owned and controlled by the organization. Additionally, Appian's AI Process Platform’s ability to integrate seamlessly with various systems using multiple methods, including connected systems, pub/sub methods, and web services is well received by users, since this flexibility allows organizations to connect with numerous upstream and downstream systems efficiently. Furthermore, its ability to enable rapid application development through its low code environment resulting in quick development and deployment of applications is also well appreciated by users. This leads to the ease of creating apps in minutes, which accelerates digital transformation and reduces overall time-to-market. Furthermore, its driven and promising roadmap which includes intention to infuse generative AI assisted design objects for the purpose of process modelling amongst other key objectives, makes it a promising and continued leader in this space, having a deserving mention as ‘Thinkers/ Conceptualisers’ in the IPO space of 2025.
AgilePoint = Out and Out Thinkers
Having propagated the very IPO mindset through their actions since the beginning, AgilePoint enables rapid creation of adaptive cross-functional universal process orchestration at scale to deliver both efficiency and transformation simultaneously without incurring any technical debt. This they are able to achieve at a significant pace, and comparatively cheaper pricing compared to the other players, through enabling enterprise citizen development (collaborative development between Business and IT) with a layered low-code/no-code universal process orchestration platform and a layered governance framework as well. Especially, the Business Rules Engine (BRE) capability by AgilePoint effectively enables the creation of dynamic workflows by applying specific business logic that is customizable, making it markedly easier for businesses and end-users to implement complex automated decisions. It should be noted that majority capabilities including this BRE by AgilePoint is received overwhelmingly by the users as well. Overall, AgilePoint’s comprehensive reporting tools, its native integration and support for AI & RPA features, and its versatile and adaptive low-code/no-code platform (amongst several other features within its IPO offering), make it genuinely popular and desirable amongst its large end-user base, and worthy of the title of ‘Thinkers/ Ideologists in the IPO landscape of 2025’.
Axon Ivy = Genuine Anchors (Remarkable Niche Achievers)
Being a strong legacy player operating in the Automation Space for multiple decades, its commendable to understand that the company has recently launched its newest version of the Axon Ivy Automation Platform – the Axon Ivy Version 12. Interestingly enough, this platform supports end-to-end integration with various third-party systems and adheres to industry standards like BPMN 2.0, ensuring steadfast compatibility and flexibility. Axon Ivy also plans to further focus on expanding its built-in automation capabilities, including AI-driven decision-making, intelligent process mining, and developing further tighter synergies between RPA, IDP, and ECM. The company, looking towards building their customer experience and related impact further, would also continue to evolve its marketplace into a dynamic ecosystem, with future enhancements. This would mean focussing on expanding the range of prebuilt connectors, along with AI-powered recommendations directed specifically for integration, and a more seamless developer experience for creating and sharing extensions. Overall, the platform's AI and machine learning capabilities, synced with task mining and decision automation, are considered a major strength by users. Customers specifically appreciate how these features enable businesses to optimize processes in real-time, automate decision-making, and gain deeper insights into the overall operational performance.
All in all, Axon Ivy (a legacy Automation Player) with its brand new version 12 (suggesting their ability to reinvent and better themselves, making themselves future ready and aligning more steadfastly to the user requirements), could be considered worthy of its spot as being a consistent and remarkable Genuine Anchor or Niche Achiever, pioneering and being consistent in the Automation/Orchestration Space since a long time!
SS&C Blue Prism = Theoretical Ideologists
The company is another steadfast example of an Ideologist, when it comes to the IPO Market. Like a seasoned revolutionary, they have consistently raised the overall bar for their Automation offerings and have also been working towards their Orchestration offerings for some time now. SS&C Blue Prism’s Chorus BPM offers scalable infrastructure, allowing organizations to adjust resources based on demand while benefiting from AWS's security and reliability, taking a pertinent lead in this regard over its other competitors (in this particular aspect).
However, there is another side to this journey. Being a legacy automation player in the market since 2001, Blue Prism no doubt has been one of the pioneers in this space. However, its offering is also being plagued by some legacy/ adaptably issues to keep in touch with the current user requirements. Specifically, it has been observed that Blue Prism's pricing structure, especially for larger-scale deployments, could be considered relatively expensive compared to other competitive orchestration platforms, which particularly becomes a point of concern for the users when scaling the platform across the enterprise.
Specifically it should be noted that,
As a whole, Blue Prism which has been a pioneer in the global Automation space and is also making efforts towards their orchestration journey, should be focussing urgently on these key concerns discussed above. This would ensure they sustain and increase their leadership in the Automation Space, and start making a mark for themselves similarly in the Orchestration Space, getting past their current tag of ‘Theoretical Ideologists’.
‘The Pega Platform’ (by Pegasystems) is a comprehensive business process management (BPM) and robotic process automation (RPA) solution, which offers a dynamic and distinctly advanced case management feature, allowing for adaptive handling of cases based on real-time data and evolving scenarios. Due to the strong integration of generative AI capabilities, including those like the GenAI Blueprint, which enhances – the workflow design, promotion of accelerated digital transformation, and AI-powered decisioning and workflow automation, all in all, it appears that Pega enables businesses to make nuanced decision making.
However, it must also be noted that the pricing structure for the Pega Platform may be absolutely prohibitive for small to medium-sized enterprises, potentially severely limiting accessibility, and effective market penetration for Pega. Furthermore, users have repeatedly observed that compared to other leading vendor offerings, the Pega Platform is highly resource intensive in terms of its maintenance cycle, such that maintaining and updating the system would require significantly more resources, which may be a constraint for organizations with limited IT support. This dichotomy and paradox especially can’t be lost on a major and legacy automation vendor like Pegasystems which has been otherwise defining the space for more than four decades. Compared to other leading vendors, while the Pega offers robust relevant capabilities, still tailoring it to specific businesses and case specific needs could be extremely complex, time-consuming, and resource intensive for users, as per extensive comparative user feedbacks.
Overall, although the Pega with its advanced Chatbot feature which promotes - varied knowledge articles, helping customers advance their own service cases and providing the associated necessary knowledge, still has a considerable distance to go to achieve the level of customer satisfaction and acceptance as compared to other leading IPO vendors. Hence, Pegasystems with all its challenges and strong points combined, stands as a ‘Passive Pioneer’ in the Process Automation & IPO Space, since in spite of being a strong legacy player, there is much that is left to desire if one thinks from the end user perspective.
Last Word –
The global IPO (Intelligent Process Orchestration) landscape is thus evolving quite interestingly, through a combination of various traditional/ legacy key players as well as some niche players – through which, some ‘leaders’ are being born, and who are shaping the direction of this market. Ultimately, lets understand that, not mere ‘Technological Supremacy’, but rather, the vendors who are able to - actually connect with the users, understand their pulse and are able to tweak their offerings and services based on the real-time and current market demands, would retain being the true IPO leader in the space, in the coming time!
