Apple Inc. has announced its adoption of the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard, enabling cross-platform messaging between iOS and Android devices. This support for iPhone is to be released through a software update "later next year (2024)," introducing a host of iMessage-style features to facilitate messaging between Apple and Android devices. This would provide users with features such as read receipts, typing indicators, and high-quality images, among others, for a cross-platform messaging experience. Rich Communication Services also offers support for group messaging, photos, messaging over WiFi, and more. However, SMS and MMS will remain accessible as fallback options when necessary.
iMessage will retain its status as the default messaging application for iPhone users, with RCS serving as an alternative for communication with Android users. This strategic choice appears to be aimed at preserving the security and privacy advantages inherent in iMessage. Although Apple has clarified that the initial impact will be on P2P (person-to-person) messaging, the next logical step is highly anticipated—unlocking this technology for business use. This could enable CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) providers to deliver RCS campaigns to audiences on both Android and Apple devices, broadening the scope of messaging capabilities.
Why is Apple starting to support RCS (Rich Communication Services)?
The three key factors driving the decision are as follows:
EU regulation:
In 2022, the EU moved ahead with the DMA (Digital Markets Act), emphasizing a mandate for tech giants, such as Apple, to ensure fundamental features within their instant messaging services by 2024. This implies a broader accessibility to iMessage and the app store. Non-compliance with these regulations could entail huge fines amounting to a substantial 15 to 20 percent of the total revenue. This itself is a compelling reason for these companies to consider supporting RCS.
Improving user experiences:
Apple's choice to embrace RCS marks a positive advancement in mobile messaging. This movement promises to deliver more unified and feature-rich user experiences across iOS and Android platforms.
The increasing popularity of RCS:
According to Abhishek Ghosh, Analyst at Quadrant Knowledge Solutions “there will be approximately five billion RCS users by 2030, which is almost half the world’s smartphone users. However, considering the prospect of extending RCS access to all iOS users, these figures are anticipated to surge, positioning RCS as a major contender in the messaging ecosystem.”
Critics have contended that Apple's persistent reluctance to embrace RCS has contributed to the fragmentation of messaging ecosystems, particularly impacting Android users. The tech community has engaged in debates over Apple's stance, which is often perceived as prioritizing ecosystem exclusivity, prompting discussions on issues of interoperability and user convenience. This decision to support RCS was a result of persistent attempts by other rivals to convince Apple to embrace the technology.
Analysts at Quadrant Knowledge Solutions believe that “The unsustainable nature of SMS/MMS interconnection for advanced messaging has influenced Apple's consideration for an alternative service. The precise timeline for implementation remains uncertain, this makes one thing clear: Apple acknowledges the significance of interconnectivity in the modern messaging landscape. As this shift unfolds, there's a possibility of a decline in peer-to-peer (P2P) MMS revenue, prompting a potential exploration of RCS adoption to open up new avenues for additional revenue streams.”
